Morgan's Organ's #1 - Head to Head by Daniel Brodie and Robert Jennex

Comic: Morgan's Organs #1 - Head to Head
Release date:  July 2016
Writer: Daniel Brodie
Artist: Robert Jennex
Cover: full-color
Interior: full-color
Synopsis:  A comedy comic book series that takes place inside our insides. What if there are micro-beings living within us who are responsible for the functioning of our inner body systems? They can influence our thoughts, our actions, and our urges. It's like Pixar's Inside Out but for grown-ups!

The Deal

Morgan's Organs #1-3 is on Kickstarter right now and I was asked to do a review of Morgan's Organs #1 and #2. I checked out the Kickstarter and the Morgan's Organs website that has an online preview of all three issues and decided to write the reviews. I got the PDF's of issues #1 and #2 and dove straight in.

The Story

As we all know the body and the mind don't always see eye-to-eye on certain issues. This comic grabs those issues by the balls and juggles them, profusely and with humor. We've all had conflicting thoughts about certain issues. Now imagine if it wasn't just your mind and your body talking to each other, but every part of your body. Those two voices just turned into many and when the penis gets involved... well... lets just say fun ensues. I don't want to give too much away but imagine that when your mind, penis, appendix, anus and a whole lot of other organs all get an opinion.

The protagonist of the story is Morgan, who's been on a dry spell lately, but not of his own choosing. His mind has other ideas of what Morgan should be focussing on. We see Morgan as an unwitting participant to his innards infighting. It's nice to see the results the fighting intestines have on Morgan in real life. We don't really get to know Morgan and his friends, but that's ok, the name of the series is Morgan's Organs after all. His real life friends try to help Morgan get a date, but aren't very successful. Coarse language isn't spared, which is part of the reason this comic is for mature readers.

The Look

The full-color cartoon style artwork is done with great precision. Robert Jennex' art fits the story just as Daniel Brodies' story fits the art. I like how the non-essentials in every panel have a paler color, where the thing you're supposed to be looking at is brightly colored. Your eyes are drawn to the right place straight away. The shading is done near perfection. There are no distractions, the brightly colored main item in a panel immediately demands attention, the story is well laid out and reads smoothly from panel to panel. When you're reading the story and you see a panel with a lot of people/organs in it then pause for a second and look around that panel. There's usually something funny in it.
My favorite bit might just be the Morgan Freeman cameo.
I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see a writer and artist mash so well together for a project. In this case it's truly a mariage of skills.

The Conclusion

This comic is definitely for mature readers (18+). The art and text is explicit on some pages, but never vulgar, debasing or demeaning. The artwork fits this story perfectly and the page count is almost double that of a regular comic at 44 pages. That just means there's more to enjoy in just this first issue. Would I have bought this if I saw it at my local comic store? I don't think I would have picked it first off the rack, but that has more to do with my personal preferences. But if I'd picked it up and seen some of the interior pages I would have. This comic has a fresh view on how life happens and does so in a humoristic way. I'm slightly conflicted on if I'd want to know more about Morgan in the next issues, because he was left behind a bit while we got to know his organs. Then again, this series is called Morgan's organs, so maybe it's good they're the main focus.

How to get a copy

As I am writing this the Kickstarter for issue #3 (that also has #1 and #2 available) is running until June 15th 2019. After the Kickstarter ends you'll be able to get the comic issues at the Morgan's Organs website. Which is also the place where you can read some previews of all three issues.
